Projects continue for the reconstruction of the activity center

Several elements were completed as part of the San Marcos Center of Activities “reconstruction project” that began following the flooding of the facility.

The activity center closed in late October following an incident after a 3-inch poly pipe disconnected from its fitting and caused flooding to spread throughout the facility.

As of Wednesday, March 2, completed projects include repairing the broken pipe and completely drying out the building using large desiccant dehumidifiers and a humidity mapping process.

Several other works have been completed, including the addition of carpets and baseboards throughout the building and the installation of the building’s new water heater.

In addition to the finished pieces, there are also ongoing projects. As of Monday, March 7, the installation of wood floors began in the gymnasium, the children’s room and the fitness room.

Other small works that are still in progress are the final touch-up painting and the distribution of all stored items to their original location.

Projects that have not yet been completed include the replacement of the flooring in the weight room and the three racquetball courts.

According to the City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department, while the facility remains closed, “all current memberships are suspended and will be extended for the number of days the facility is closed.” Staff encourage residents to take advantage of the City’s sidewalks, trails and natural spaces during this time.

The city also said an estimated reopening of the activity center is expected in early April, barring any delays.
