A resident raises the alarm as water leaks from the San Marcos Activity Center, which is closed indefinitely


SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) – Several inches of water covered the floor of the San Marcos Activity Center overnight and poured down the building, prompting someone to alert local police around 3 a.m. Friday .

The center will be closed “indefinitely” due to water damage caused by flooding, the city of San Marcos said in a statement. The problem appears to stem from a 3-inch polyethylene pipe that has become disconnected from its coupler, the city added.

City memberships are suspended and the city will refrain from charging automatic payments. Anyone who still has items in their lockers can contact the center at activitycenterinfo@sanmarcostx.gov or call 512-393-8280 to pick them up. A list of parks is on the San Marcos Parks and Recreation website.

Staff are also working to find alternative options for people who have used the center and say people can consider using the city’s sidewalks, trails and natural areas in the meantime. His Total Wellness classes will be virtual.

The San Marcos Activity Center features basketball courts, aerobics rooms, a swimming pool, racquetball courts, a 2,000 square foot weight room, and a 1-bedroom aerobics studio. 800 square feet, as well as childcare, meeting rooms and rental space. The City says the center recently underwent a renovation project to update lockers, bathrooms and carpeting.

The facility opened in 1997 after a 1994 bond election that approved $5.3 million for the center.
