How to Access and Manage Your Google Activity Using Google Activity Controls

0

Google offers a wide range of products in the field of technology. Popular Google products include Chrome for web browsing, YouTube for video streaming, and Maps for route planning. Although you can access the products online or through an app, Google recommends users create an account to maximize the benefits of these products.

When you use these products with your Google Account, Google records some of your activity in a My Activity repository. Recorded activity includes sites you visit, searches you perform, and videos you watch. You can manage the type of activity recorded using a feature in your Google Account called Activity Controls.

Types of activity saved in My Activity

Google only records your activity on a Google product or service if it falls into one of the following categories:

  • Web and app activity: This covers your search history and activity on Google products like Chrome, Maps, and search. It also includes audio recordings of your interactions with Google Assistant.
  • Location History: This saves data of places you visit or search, including travel directions. It also provides personalized recommendations on places to visit.
  • YouTube History: This covers videos you search or watch on YouTube.

According to Google, the purpose of storing user activity data is to personalize the user experience. Additionally, users can change the type of activity they want to record.

How to change the activity saved to your Google Account

For your activity to be registered, the activity must correspond to the categories explained previously. Additionally, you need to sign in to your Google Account for the data to be stored under My Activity. If you qualify, here’s how to change the activity that’s saved to your Google Account:

Step 1: Open the Google Accounts page in a web browser and sign in with your account details.

2nd step: On the left of the new window, click Data and Privacy.

Step 3: Scroll down to History Settings.

Step 4: Click My Activity to launch the My Google Activity page.

Step 5: On the new page, click one of the buttons for Web & App Activity, Location History, or YouTube History. This should take you to the Activity Controls page.

Step 6: On the Activity Checks page, scroll down and click “See all Activity Checks”. This should reveal all activity checks.

Step 7: Scroll down to Web and app control. You can click the Disable button to prevent Google from saving data about your web and app searches.

Step 8: In the Web & App Activity subset, you can enable or disable recording of your history, voice, and audio activity in Chrome.

Step 9: Scroll down to Location History Control. You can click the Disable button to prevent Google from recording data about your location.

Step 10: Scroll down to YouTube History Control. You can click the Disable button to prevent Google from saving data about your searches or watches.

Step 11: In the YouTube history subset, you can enable or disable recording of your YouTube watch and search history, voice, and audio activity.

How to delete previous activity saved to your Google Account

Disabling the setting to allow Google to save your web, location, and YouTube history does not delete previously saved activity. On the contrary, only your future activities are not recorded while the old ones are kept. To delete your previously saved activity, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Open the Google Accounts page in a web browser and sign in with your account details.

2nd step: On the left of the new window, click Data and Privacy.

Step 3: Scroll down to History Settings.

Step 4: Click My Activity to launch the My Google Activity page.

Step 5: On the My Google Activity page, click “Filter by date and product”.

Step 6: Select the time range of the activity you want to delete.

Step 7: Select the Google product with the activity you want to delete.

Step 8: Click Apply to save your filters.

Step 9: You can either click Delete next to the selected filters or scroll through the filtered activity results and delete them individually.

How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Your Google Account

If you decide to enable activity controls on your Google account, you will need to enable two-factor authentication. This way you can protect your data and protect it from theft.
