The Newport 60+ Activity Center is proud to announce its official recognition as one of 108 senior centers recognized and currently accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC). We will be celebrating this great honor in conjunction with Hot Diggity Dog Day, sponsored by the Newport Senior Citizens Activity Association (NSCAA). The celebration is funded by contributions from the Friends of the 60+ Activity Center, the NSCAA and the City of Newport.
Join us on July 26, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., to celebrate this great event. A special “thank you” to Peggy O’Callaghan, Ann Way, Bev Farrell and the many staff, volunteers and community members who dedicated their time and effort throughout this comprehensive credential application process.
Accreditation provides official recognition that the 60+ Activity Center meets the nine standards for the operation of centers for the elderly. This is a two-phase process. The community self-assessment phase is based on nine national standards for the operation of seniors’ centers: purpose, community collaboration, program planning, evaluation, financial management, administration/human resources, record keeping and facilities.
The self-assessment and accreditation process is the most important step we have taken in analyzing the structure of our organization. This brings well-deserved recognition to our 60+ activity center and assures the community that we are fully prepared to provide services and opportunities to our older residents and their families. We will demonstrate that the 60+ Activity Center is the gateway to a wide range of services and opportunities for older people of all ages, needs and abilities.
We are now members of a special group. Now is the time to begin our National Accreditation Celebration. As quoted by Dr. A Eugene Smiley, Past President of NISC, “It says we do everything we can to go the extra mile for our customers” and “Through accreditation we can be responsive to our centers and to ethnic diversity, and, at the same time, to operate from a common philosophy of a center for the elderly.
