HOUSTON – On Monday, KPRC2 Investigates got an exclusive minute-by-minute log of the troubles at the ill-fated Travis Scott Astroworld Festival at NRG Park.
The handwritten diary, which documents dozens of serious crowd control issues throughout the day, began logging events three hours before the site’s gates even opened. Just before the doors opened to the public, Apex Security, a private company, asked for help. Their concern seemed justified.
At 10:02 am, two minutes after the entrance of the public, the newspaper indicates: Fences of the site damaged, no control of the participants.
At 10:30 a.m., “more police asked behind the merchandising.” after the crowd tried to break through a barrier.
At 10:54 “Approx. 100 participants jumping the fence in the purple lot.
At 11:34 a.m. “Two participants jump the fence at the Texans practice field.”
At 12:59 p.m. “Participants are trying to get under the fence.
At 3:21 p.m., “HPD requests assistance at the yellow field for a large crowd trying to break through the fence.”
Over the next several hours, incidents of crowd control, property damage and injuries were recorded with astonishing regularity, within minutes of each other.
Then at 9:28 p.m., a diary entry reads, “That’s when it all got real.”
At 9:30 p.m. “HPD reports that several people have been trampled, fainted in front of the stage…”
At 9:32 p.m. “HPD report of an unconscious woman in the middle of the crowd.”
At 9:35 p.m. the HFD radio operator advised that we had at least 5 9-1-1 calls related to an unconscious person in the crowd. CPR report possible. »
A flurry of ambulances and emergency transport vehicles began flooding the scene minutes later, with growing calls for help.
The last readable entry came at 11:38 p.m., “HPD Murworth @ Kirby, Male unable to walk…17 total transports…11 CPR – 9 total fatalities…”
The death toll was actually eight at the time, a miscount, but a ninth person, Bharti Shahani, 22, died from injuries sustained at Wednesday’s concert.
