Yunzhai Village Community Activity Center / THAD+SUP Workshop
Text description provided by the architects. Yunzhai Village of Changyuan City in Henan Province, where the project is located, is an ordinary village with characteristics typical of rural areas in central China. In recent decades, the well-being of villagers has improved significantly through social development, but a series of social problems have also arisen. For example, the exodus of labor has caused a dip in the local demographic structure; the traditional bonds of families and neighbors have been weakened, with issues of aging and children being left behind remaining unresolved. As a result, the public ritual spaces here, in decline or disappearing, are in urgent need of reconstruction. As a result, the village decided to build a community center for public gatherings.
Through negotiations with our customers, the entrance of the village, where several villages are connected, was chosen as the site, so that the community center could benefit more than the village of Changyuan itself, serving as a space for public activity with the cohesion and unity of traditional clusters.
With a relatively small site size and construction area, as well as a limited budget, the project aims to make a big difference with little intervention. The enclosed interior spaces, exterior courtyards, and roof deck are connected by multiple travel routes and managed separately, so that during times when the interior spaces are closed, visitors can still enjoy the multi-dimensional outdoor garden at any time. time of day, thus reducing operating and maintenance costs while maximizing the usefulness of the available spaces.
Public participation is a key factor in the project, which means that the villagers build, use and manage the community center together. All members of the construction team are local residents, with the majority coming from nearby villages, and the red brick masonry techniques and metal processing techniques applied to the project are local and reliable.
